Have found that whenever I try to reorganise my digital music it seems that my main aim is to define all music that I like under the banner of “punk.” (Within reason of course.) I stretch the definition quite well. Also, the directory with the most amount of artists in it is also the one that I never really play anything from (the “indie” folder.)

Modern life is making us shit
Flew in to Brisbane from Sydney this afternoon. Sat next to two young women. One was a Bartender from Victoria. Very loud type, all chatty and hellos. In town to see her family, alright to chat to for a while. Other was a north Sydney girl. In fashion design, talked about the “art scene” of Sydney, how it’s better in summer because it’s light for longer at night. They...

The music that I’m into hasn’t been in the mainstream for a while. Sure, it sometimes pops into the public consciousness, but for the most it develops, sells, plays and dies in the underground. It’s largely DIY; music fans hear the bands, buy the albums, go to the gigs, band dies. Usually the bands are released on DIY or very small labels. Small labels don’t have to spend...

Reasons to cheerful
There are occupations in unis all over Britain, Tory HQ got ransacked, Nick Clegg is the most hated man in the country, voices in the Labour party are whispering “general strike” for the first time in 20 years, and the prince of wales has images of the guillotine flashing past his eyes. We have a rolling riot in Greece, and the workers are screaming “European General...

Overheard in an Anarchist bookstore today
Conversation between two people working in a Sydney Anarchist bookstore:
Clerk one: So is there anything happening around the Gaza Flotilla?
Clerk two: There was a flash rally on Monday night, and I think there is another on the weekend:
One: I've never been to a rally, what do people do at them? Throw things through windows?
Two: Well some people hang around, some make speeches, sometimes there are politicians doing speeches. Some people play drums and chant, and sometimes yes people through things through windows.
One: So is there any real point to them?
Two: The big problem with rallies is that it's just a heap of people doing different things, doing what they want. What you need is clear direction and a strong leader or leadership, so that things get done. Because without that people are just sheep, you know? It's fine going out and doing what you like, making yourself heard, but I think that energy could be put into practical things.

Let There Be Blogs: Douglas Adams on the Internet... →
So people complain that there’s a lot of rubbish online, or that it’s dominated by Americans, or that you can’t necessarily trust what you read on the web. Imagine trying to apply any of those criticisms to what you hear on the telephone. Of course you can’t ‘trust’ what people tell you on the web anymore than you can ‘trust’ what people tell you on megaphones, postcards or in...
